Full description

Begin in the green horseshoe of parks at Zrinjevac, a postcard start for photos of fountains and 19th century facades. Walk past café laden Bogovićeva toward Ban Jelačić Square, the busy meeting point of modern Zagreb. Climb to Dolac Market, known as the city’s pantry, before following Tkalčićeva’s café terraces toward the Upper Town. Here the medieval fabric takes over at St Mark’s Square with its color tiled roof and at the Lotrščak Tower viewpoint.

The route includes entry to the Grič Tunnel, a Second World War bomb shelter that runs beneath the Upper Town. Opened to the public after a 2016 renovation, it now serves as a pedestrian link and occasional exhibition space. Your guide explains how the tunnel was planned, used and later revived, connecting the city’s layered history to the streets you are walking.

Tours typically last a couple of hours and suit most visitors comfortable with city walking and short stair sections. The Grič Tunnel is generally open daily with free entry and signed access points at Mesnička and Radićeva. Hours can vary with municipal operations, so the guide confirms availability on the day. If time and operations allow, the group may view the tiny funicular and Gornji Grad panoramas before returning to the center for onward plans.

Who it is for:

  • First time visitors who want Zagreb’s essentials in a single, well paced walk.
  • Travelers who enjoy markets, café streets and concise city history in context.
  • Photographers who want river level scenes, hilltop squares and an underground contrast in one loop.

Not suitable for:

  • Visitors who prefer long museum visits instead of an outdoor route.
  • Guests with significant mobility limitations due to stairs and cobbles in the Upper Town.
  • Travelers who expect fixed tunnel hours regardless of city operations.
